The Sexual Revolution

There was a social change in 20th century America. All that girls desired to have was money and a slim body. Society valued girls' appearances more than their achievements. And trends within pop culture and magazines only seemed to depict "flawless" women, with the idolized body shape, complexion, and clothes. These women were and are seen as the ideal in society, what every teenage girl strove to be. And if they could not be her, they at least wanted to look like her. For many girls, especially teenagers, the goal was to be sexy in order to please their peers and boyfriends. They played a part in order to be like the "half starved celebrities" that are looked up to and frequently seen in ads, movies, and magazine covers. When Miley Cyrus was on the cover of Vanity Fair at the age of 15, girls that had grown up watching and idolizing her, began to feel the social pressure of being seen as sexy and thin, even though, at that age, they do not understand what it means to be sexual or have those desires. All they seem to register is that certain body images equal freedom and positive attention. To hate one's own body became normal, and today, one in a hundred girls are anorexic. In a lot of ways, the value of sexuality has taken over women’s equality.
